On 9th October 1913 Busseto dedicated to the Maestro its most evident and long standing memorial, the monument which is still today at the centre of the main square, also named after Verdi.

The memorial by the Milanese sculptor Luigi Secchi was well received right from the start thus confirming the choice made by the Milan architects Luca Beltrami and Camillo Boito who had selected Secchi’s design as the most convincing.  On the same day the plaque commemorating Antonio Barezzi, Verdi’s friend and benefactor, was placed on the outside wall of the Palazzo where he lived.  The text to the plaque was written by Arrigo Boito while the bronze medallion with Verdi’s head was another work by Luigi Secchi.
